Ai comes from a martial arts background—her father Asato Ban was a martial artist, and she followed suit, becoming a Muay Thai champion and mastering multiple fighting disciplines. She's best known for her quick temper and tendency to resort to violence when jealous, especially if she suspects Ryotsu of flirting with other women.
Her backstory is complicated. She was born male (under the name Ryuji) but transitioned after developing feelings for her coach, who left the country before she could confess. Later, she fell for Ryotsu partly because he bears a striking resemblance to that coach. Rather than move on, she deliberately took a job as a traffic police officer at Katsushika Police Station—essentially so she could see Ryotsu regularly.
In the manga, she actually gets transformed into a genetic woman through magical means, which solidifies her new identity beyond what she'd already accomplished on her own. Her jealousy issues remain a constant source of drama and comedy, making her arguably one of the more volatile characters in her world.
