Gohan shares the spotlight as a dual main character of Dragon Ball Z with his father Goku. He's best known for being the reluctant hero—a shy, bookish kid who never wanted to fight, unlike most Saiyans who live for battle. But when his loved ones are threatened, he taps into his half-breed potential and becomes one of the series' strongest fighters, sometimes even eclipsing Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta. As an adult, he trades the cape for academia, becoming a top scholar and leaving his fighting days behind.
Gohan's relationship with Piccolo starts off tense and scary, but everything changes when Piccolo sacrifices himself to save Gohan from Nappa. After their year of training together, Piccolo openly admits he's changed—and it's because of how Gohan accepted him. From that point on, Piccolo becomes like an uncle to him. Krillin, too, serves as a close confidant, especially during the Namek saga and early in the Buu arc.
His bond with Goku is just as important. Gohan cites Goku's fearless walk toward Frieza on Namek as a major source of inspiration, and the two get rare quality time training together in the Room of Spirit and Time during the Android saga. That respect and love run deep—when Gohan heads off to fight Buu, he wears Goku's iconic orange gi as a tribute.
Outside of fighting, Gohan's into reading, fishing, and scholarly research. He might claim he doesn't share his dad's love of combat, but he feels compelled to step up when danger strikes. Fans often note his awkward stint as Great Saiyaman shows he actually enjoys being a hero, even if he's not great at it. One thing that haunted him, though, was fear of his own power—he was genuinely terrified he might kill Cell during their fight.
