Nurikabe
Nurikabe is a massive, drowsy-looking wall youkai who basically functions as Kitaro's bodyguard. In folklore, the original Nurikabe was a spirit that literally blocked people's paths when they walked around at night—pretty straightforward concept.
He first shows up in a small role at a sukiyaki party in A Walk to Hell (the Rental version), then gets more screen time in The Great Youkai War from Shounen Magazine. The character made his way into English-language releases too; the 2002 Kodansha International Bilingual Comics edition called him "Wally Wall," which is, uh, not exactly subtle.
What stands out about Nurikabe is his size—he uses it effectively to back up Kitaro and defend his friends. Despite looking half-asleep most of the time, he's solid in a fight.
