Leia and Mr. Jones pick up Dr. Kenzo Tenma and Dieter while traveling through Germany on what looks like a retirement vacation. Mr. Jones, a former policeman, is hesitant about stopping for strangers, but Leia convinces him otherwise. When their car runs out of gas, Tenma and Dieter disappear down the road—only to show up hours later with borrowed jerry cans, much to the couple's surprise. Grateful, the Joneses take them to dinner and Tenma suggests they try the Ungeheuer wine.
Mr. Jones is naturally suspicious of Tenma, relying on his old police instincts the way Inspector Lunge does. But his doubts get complicated when they visit Steinbach Castle. While reminiscing about their son Robert's letters praising the place, the Joneses reveal something darker: Robert committed murder there and is now in Stadelheim Prison in Munich.
After parting ways with Tenma and Dieter, the couple heads to the prison. Before they go in, Mr. Jones admits to Leia that he figured out Tenma was a fugitive after they'd stopped by the police station earlier. But he believes Tenma is innocent—the same way he wants to believe about his own son.
