Narumi is a Japanese martial artist skilled in Chinese kung fu who discovers he has Zonapha syndrome—a debilitating condition that causes severe respiratory problems and pain. There's an unusual catch: sufferers get temporary relief whenever they make someone laugh. Desperate to survive, he pivots to becoming a clown, though he's frankly not good at it. Things change when he meets Masaru, a kid who actually laughs at his terrible jokes. Seeing the boy in real trouble, Narumi steps in to help him, setting off the story proper.
