Dr. Tenma was a brilliant roboticist and Japan's Minister of Science. His name means "Pegasus" in Japanese—literally "heaven-horse"—which fit his ambitious reputation. But he's best known for something darker: after his nine-year-old son Tobio was killed in a car accident, Tenma became obsessed with bringing him back. He poured his genius into creating a robot to replace the boy, designing it to be virtually invincible. He called it Atom.
