A gruff old automail craftsman who mostly keeps to himself. His real passion was always engineering weapons into limbs—specifically, he'd dreamed his whole life about building hidden cannons into automail. He finally got his shot when Paninya came to him for new legs, and he jumped at the chance to weaponize them.
Winry desperately wanted to apprentice under him, but he pushed her toward Garfiel instead, even after she'd helped deliver his grandson. That changed his tune real quick when he realized she was Pinako Rockbell's granddaughter. He apparently has some complicated memories involving the "Pantheress of Resembool" that he wasn't thrilled to dredge up.
The anime took a different approach to his character—it ditched the cannon obsession entirely, though he still managed to sneak one into Paninya's right leg anyway. He's got principles about his work: he turned down a wealthy young client who wanted a fighter's arm despite having no actual need for it. By the end of the series, he comes around on Winry and helps her level up her skills as a mechanic.
