He raised Lucas like his own son, taking him in and giving him a home. At one point he had a wife and his own kid, but after losing them, the grief pretty much destroyed him—he stopped eating and fell into a deep depression. He's told Lucas straight up that it's better not to know what it's like to lose someone you love, and that one day death comes for everyone. That's just how it is.
