Kasa-Bake—also called Karakasa-Kozou or Bake-Gasa—is a youkai from GeGeGe no Kitarou who's best known for being a recurring ally (though he sometimes switches sides and becomes an antagonist). What's interesting about Kasa-Bake compared to most other youkai in the series is that he's usually portrayed as an entire species rather than a single character. The name pretty much describes what he is: an umbrella that's come to life, somewhere between a paper umbrella boy and a full-fledged monster umbrella, depending on which translation you prefer.
He shows up throughout the series in various forms and contexts. Fans often note that his inconsistent characterization—bouncing between friend and foe—actually works in the story's favor, keeping encounters with him unpredictable. The character embodies the kind of low-level, mischievous youkai energy that makes GeGeGe no Kitarou feel lived-in and weird rather than purely mythological.
