The main protagonist and narrator. He's a second-year student in F-Class at Fumizuki Gakuen High School—and yeah, he's pretty much exactly as dumb as he looks. His parents literally call him "the fool over all the world," his grades are abysmal, and the school has him marked as "under observation" because of it. He'll deny it constantly, but the evidence is. overwhelming.
That said, he's got a solid moral compass buried under all that stupidity. He'll throw himself into harm's way to help his friends without hesitation, and he's genuinely kind and gentle once you get past the cowardly, self-preservation instinct that kicks in the moment danger appears. Weirdly, this combination makes him fairly popular. People like him.
He's conventionally attractive, which is hilarious because everyone agrees he looks better dressed as a girl. His classmate Mutsurini has basically turned this into a side business, secretly selling photos and merchandise of "Aki-chan"—basically Yoshii's hidden idol persona.
He crushes on Mizuki but doesn't expect anything to happen. Minami obviously likes him, though he's convinced she hates him after some near-death experiences. Hard to blame him for the confusion.
Yoshii ended up at this school because his parents thought the tuition was cheap. They're overseas for work, so he lives alone—and initially, he spent money so recklessly that he was literally surviving on salt and water until his older sister came back to Japan. She and their mom are hopeless at housework, so Yoshii's become the expert. He's particularly good at cooking.
He's right-handed now, supposedly switched from being left-handed, though who knows if that's actually true.
His summoned creature is absurdly weak compared to everyone else's, but he's skilled enough at controlling it that he can hold his own against way stronger ones. There's a catch though—as the "under observation" student, any damage his creature takes comes right back to him, so he avoids summoning unless absolutely necessary. His creature's weapon is a modified school uniform and a wooden sword. The occult version is a Dullahan—a headless knight, because of course a fool's creature is headless. According to the school principal, he's basically the one breaking the entire Test Summon System.
He ranked 8th among male characters and 13th overall in the 2009 "Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!" rankings.
