Kaneki's whole life changed the night he met Kamishiro Rize. What seemed like a promising date with an intelligent woman he was attracted to turned into a nightmare when she revealed herself as a ghoul and attacked him. He barely survived, and the hospital—or more specifically, a doctor named Kanou who secretly experiments on ghouls and humans—saved him by transplanting what Kaneki thought was a kidney. It wasn't. Kanou had actually grafted part of Rize's kagune into him, making him the first in what would become a series of disturbing human-ghoul hybrid experiments.
Being half-ghoul came with a serious catch. His body now flooded with RC Cells from Rize's kagune, Kaneki lost the ability to eat normal food—human food makes him sick. But he gained superhuman regeneration and the ability to use a kagune. The real problem was his conscience. Unlike most ghouls, he refused to kill humans for food, even when it wouldn't hurt anyone. Instead, he survived on coffee and, when absolutely desperate, by consuming other ghouls.
Eventually, Kaneki started working with other ghouls—including Banjou and Tsukiyama Shuu—trying to reduce the number of dangerous ghouls wreaking havoc on human society. His distinctive white-patched mask and half-ghoul appearance earned him the nickname "One-Eye" in ghoul circles. When stress and trauma pushed him to his limits, his kagune transformed into something resembling a centipede, and the name stuck. The CCG classified him as an SS-Rated threat.
