The story's central character. He left his quiet life in rural Hiroshima to stay with his aunt in Tokyo, hoping to reinvent himself. On a visit to his new high school, he spots an incredible high jumper training and falls hard—like, instant crush hard. Turns out she's his next-door neighbor, Suzuka Asahina, which makes things immediately awkward and complicated.
Yamato's got a pretty laid-back personality that constantly lands him in embarrassing situations. He's clumsy, not the sharpest academically, and honestly kind of hopeless when it comes to understanding how girls actually feel. That said, when things matter, he can flip a switch and get serious about whatever he's doing.
What he is naturally good at is sprinting. After discovering this talent, he joined the track and field team—which becomes a big part of his life as the story progresses.
