Botan guides souls across the Sanzu River to the Spirit World, though she's nothing like the grim reaper you'd expect—bright pink kimono, blue ponytail, and a personality to match. She's cheerful and quick with sarcasm, which Yusuke immediately calls her out on when they first meet. What starts as her job ferrying him to the afterlife turns into something deeper: she becomes his unofficial guardian, helping him return to his body and eventually serving as the liaison between him and his friends on one side, Koenma on the other.
She's not built for combat like the people around her. No Rei Gun or Spirit Sword to speak of, though she clearly has enough spiritual energy to operate detective equipment and heightened spirit awareness to back it up. When she does fight—usually to bail Keiko out of trouble—she grabs whatever's heavy: her oar, a metal bat, her fists if necessary. There's a hint she might have actual spirit powers like Yusuke's (the episode where she considered using the Concentration Ring to demolish walls suggests as much), but if she does, they're not something she openly uses. More interesting is her healing ability, which goes far enough to actually halt or slow demonic transformations.
Despite working hard and caring deeply for her friends, Botan keeps her struggles to herself. She's the kind of person who doesn't let on when she's struggling.
