Blaine started out as a Team Rocket scientist, drawn to the organization because of his passion for research. He conducted experiments on what would eventually become some of Red's most powerful Pokémon, including Gyarados and Eevee. His turning point came after learning about Red's defiance of Team Rocket—particularly Red's protection of Mew—which pushed him to leave the organization and seek redemption for his past.
When Red arrived on Cinnabar Island, Blaine was already under siege by Team Rocket operatives and a newly captured Moltres that Sabrina had loaned them. Blaine's Rapidash got Red to his Pokémon Lab, where Red used Blaine's Gyarados to hold back Moltres long enough to revive an Aerodactyl from a fossil. That Aerodactyl became the key to saving Blaine and defeating the threat.
Blaine's real burden came from his work on Mewtwo. While still working for Team Rocket, he'd spliced Mew's DNA with his own genetic material to create the synthetic Pokémon. Some of Mewtwo's DNA remained in Blaine's body, allowing him to track it later—but it also created a psychic bond between them. This connection plagued both of them for years. Being separated for too long caused them both to fall ill, and Blaine spent considerable effort trying to sever the link without harming either party.
During the Cerise Island incident, Sabrina's Spoons of Destiny paired Blaine with Yellow to face the Elite Four. Their battle against Lance ultimately failed due to Mewtwo and Blaine's bond weakening them both, leaving Yellow to confront Lance alone. The real solution came later during the Mask of Ice's scheme in Johto, when Entei chose Blaine as its partner. The legendary Pokémon's healing flames finally cut the connection between him and Mewtwo, freeing them both.
Beyond his serious demeanor, Blaine has a lighter side. He's known for occasionally using riddles to ease tense situations, and his training methods have led to some awkward moments—like the time he singed his moustache and had to resort to fake ones.
