A former psychology graduate student, he's known as a "genius swindler" who took down the massive MLM operation Shuuei to get revenge for his mother's sake. He wasn't originally supposed to be in the Liar Game at all—he only entered during Round II by standing in for another player—but by Round III he'd earned enough respect (and fear) from the other contestants to become the unofficial leader of the Southern Country, though he genuinely tries to keep things balanced within the group. Yokoya eventually calls him out for it, though, mocking him for secretly manipulating his teammates all along.
He gets drawn into helping Nao when he notices she has the same honest, genuine nature his mother had. That connection seems to be what makes him actually care about the game beyond his initial revenge mission.
