Kero is the guardian of the Clow Cards and one of two magical creatures Clow Reed created before his death. He was handpicked by Clow to judge who'd become the next master of the cards—a role he takes seriously, if not always gracefully. When Sakura accidentally unleashes the cards, Kero spots potential in her and becomes her teacher, guide, and occasional pain in the neck throughout the whole capture saga. Once she officially becomes master, he sticks around as her advisor and protector, especially when things get dangerous.
In his true form, Kero's a large winged lion in armor—pretty intimidating stuff. But he spends most of his time as a small, plush orange creature with wings, which is a lot less threatening and definitely more practical for living in Sakura's room. His actual personality matches that cozy exterior better anyway: he's bossy and demanding with a pointed Osaka accent, loves video games obsessively, and has a serious sweet tooth. Still, his affection for Sakura is genuine. Hurt her, and you'll see a very different side of him.
Unlike his fellow guardian Yue, Kero draws power directly from the sun rather than his master's magic. That said, Sakura needs to control the Fire and Light cards to unlock his true form. In the anime, they swapped Fire for the Earth card to speed things along.
The name's borrowed from Greek mythology—Cerberus, the three-headed guard dog of the underworld. Fitting, in a way.
