Yukishiro Tomoe
Tomoe came from a samurai family with minor bureaucratic standing under the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo—her father held a low-level administrative post. She was the oldest child and had one younger brother, Enishi, who essentially grew up with her as a maternal figure after their mother died not long after he was born.
Like most people of her social position, she practiced Buddhism as required. She was pretty introspective and used diaries as an outlet to work through feelings she found hard to express face-to-face. Writing became her way of processing her inner life.
