Synopsis

It's been a decade since the Bakumatsu wars ended and the revolutionaries toppled the Tokugawa shogunate. They wanted to build a peaceful nation free from oppression, and the Meiji era has officially begun. Problem is, peace never actually arrived. Swords are outlawed now, but people are still dying in the streets. War orphans have no one to turn to, and the government's more interested in padding their wallets than actually helping anyone. Kenshin Himura is a wandering swordsman trying to make sure the revolution was worth it. He used to be Hitokiri Battousai—basically a legendary one-man killing machine for the revolutionaries. These days, he's drowning in guilt over all the lives he took. He's sworn off killing for good and figures he won't find any peace until murder stops happening altogether. Fast forward to year 11 of Meiji, and Kenshin crosses paths with Kaoru Kamiya, who runs a small dojo on the verge of shutting down. Someone's been committing murders while claiming to be the Battousai, and the crimes are being pinned on Kaoru's dojo. The police can't do anything about it. So Kenshin sticks around to help clear both their names—but how long can he actually stay before his past finally catches up with him?
