Fuji is a giant who's been treated as a freak his whole life. After a near-fatal attack left him broken, an old man named Saizuchi rescued him—and basically never let him forget it. Saizuchi exploited Fuji's vulnerability and depression to shape him into a formidable fighter, constantly reminding him that he owed his life to his savior. It's a manipulative dynamic that worked, turning the broken giant into something dangerous.
That all changed when Hiko Seijūrō defeated him. Rather than finish the job, Hiko saw past the monster everyone else saw and recognized something deeper—a genuine martial artist underneath. It was the first time anyone had looked at Fuji as a person rather than a freak. The encounter awakened something real in him.
Later, after his capture, the Meiji government conscripted Fuji to northern Hokkaidō, where he's been assigned to develop the land and serve as a military asset when war calls. Whether that's an improvement on his life with Saizuchi is debatable.
