Hidan's immortality comes directly from his faith in Jashin, a deity that demands constant human sacrifice to sustain it. Miss too many offerings and he'll eventually die—which probably explains why he's so committed to the killing. His religion isn't just about worship; it's given him a genuinely dangerous ability. After drinking an opponent's blood and drawing Jashin's triangular seal on the ground, he can link himself to them like a voodoo doll. Any wound he inflicts on himself gets mirrored onto his target. Since he can't actually die, he's free to stab, burn, or destroy himself as much as he wants—and he gets off on it.
Personality-wise, Hidan's a nightmare: sadistic, arrogant, impatient, and aggressively rude. Kakuzu, his long-suffering partner, constantly deals with his attitude and has admitted they'd probably kill each other if Hidan could actually die. Somehow that made them work as a team. Kisame even joked about calling them the "Zombie Combi" since both are functionally unkillable. Within the Akatsuki, Hidan doesn't bother hiding his disdain—he throws around insulting nicknames and openly defies Pain's authority, which nobody else really gets away with.
He wasn't always like this. He left Yugakure because the village's peace drove him crazy; he needed violence to feel alive. Before he left, he murdered his neighbors in cold blood just for entertainment.
