Ai (called Amber in the English dub) is the cloned daughter of Dr. Fuji, the scientist who created Mewtwo. As Aitwo, she becomes Mewtwo's first and only real friend, teaching him about the world through memories of her original life. Her death becomes the emotional turning point of Mewtwo's entire existence—though he's later made to forget her completely, which fans often note adds a tragic layer to his character.
She was originally cut from the English release of Mewtwo Strikes Back but showed up in the opening sequence that eventually made it onto the Mewtwo Returns DVD as part of "The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin." The character also appeared in The Birth of Mewtwo, a radio drama that was released on CD exclusively in Japan and gave fans deeper insight into her relationship with Mewtwo before the film events.
