Eugene Currier, who goes by Jin Kariya, is the most powerful Bount—a synthetic being accidentally created through an experiment in Soul Society. He's instantly recognizable by his short white hair, piercing red eyes, and a prominent scar running down his chin from a hollow attack. Interestingly, he wasn't born this way; he had brown hair and brown eyes as a child, but his appearance changed permanently when he first merged with his doll, Messer.
Kariya's story is one of betrayal and escalating revenge. A Shinigami named Rantao saved him from execution in the Bounts' Cave and gave him Messer—literally "knife" in German—setting him on a path that would define the rest of his life. The moment he merged with his doll during combat, something shifted in him. He became consumed with destroying Soul Society, a goal that only hardened after he witnessed the Shinigami massacre the Bounts during their conflict with the Quincy. When Kariya eventually learned that the Shinigami had deliberately created his entire race just to annihilate them, his rage calcified into something absolute.
His plan evolved from simply gathering living spirits to increase power—a risky process with a 50% chance of tearing open the barrier between worlds—into something far more ambitious: an outright invasion of Seireitei. He acquired a device called the Jōkaishō from the Shinigami Research Institute, claiming it could obliterate the entire capital. Whether that was truly his endgame or a means to finally end his own eternal existence remains unclear.
Kariya is frighteningly intelligent and well-informed. He speaks both German and Japanese, and he knew details about major Soul Society players like Byakuya Kuchiki and Ichigo Kurosaki long before meeting them. He was even aware of the Four Great Noble Houses and the location of classified Shinigami research. His subordinates, however—including those he married into alliances with—were nothing more than tools. He showed no genuine emotion toward any of them, viewing them purely as means to an end.
His relationship with fellow Bount Koga Gō was his closest thing to a real friendship, though even that was complicated. He once asked Koga to watch over a young Bount named Cain, a request that ended in failure when Cain was killed by his own doll. Around the same time, Kariya and Koga rescued a Shinigami named Maki Ichinose from a hollow in the desert—an act of kindness that earned Maki's unwavering loyalty.
When it came to strengthening the Bount ranks, Kariya was ruthless. He perfected the doll-summoning process into a brutal trial by fire: merge successfully and prove your strength, or die trying. It was his way of culling the weak and attracting only the power-hungry Bounts willing to follow him. He even married another Bount, Yoshino Sōma, after stopping her suicide attempt—but love had nothing to do with it. She was another piece in his larger game.
