Heita runs into Yumichika, Hanatarō, and Rin outside a bakery where he used to work. They quickly realize he's an earthbound Plus, and Yumichika's ready to perform Konsō on him—but Hanatarō and Rin step in to stop her. The group heads to a nearby river, where Rin notices how long Heita's Chain of Fate has gotten. Heita explains how he died and tells them about his real wish: he wants his mother to eat one of his cakes. He asks if they'll bake one for her instead.
The request strikes a chord. Rin agrees right away, Hanatarō's mainly just excited about eating cake, and soon they're all headed to the Urahara Shop to use Kisuke's kitchen. Heita walks them through the whole process—telling Hanatarō how to properly stir eggs, reining in Rin's constant taste-testing, and keeping Yumichika from chopping strawberries like she's possessed. When the first test cake comes out, it's. not great. Chad and Renji both react badly, and the team realizes they need to start over. They make cake after cake, running through taste testers until eventually Ururu helps out and the others are just done—hiding to avoid eating another slice.
By that night, Heita's running out of time. His mother's moving the next day, and this is their last chance. The pressure gets to him as they make the final two cakes, but when they nail the taste, it feels like a real victory. They find his mother and explain they've baked her a cake using his recipe. She breaks down though, saying it hurts too much to eat it—it reminds her too much of him.
The rejection destroys him. His reiatsu explodes outward, pulling a Menos Grande right into the situation. Heita grabs his Chain of Fate and drags his mother toward him, his grief completely overwhelming him. As things spiral, Hanatarō realizes the damage isn't physical—it's his heart breaking—and uses his Zanpakutō to heal him. Once Heita's back to himself, Rin rigs up a device so he can actually talk to his mother one more time. He tells her he's perfected the cake, and Yumichika hands her a slice. She eats it and promises him she'll never be hurt by cakes again.
With his wish finally fulfilled, Heita was sent to Soul Society through Konsō.
