Kouyou's got a genuinely kind heart—he rescues stray dogs and cares for one he names Shokora. He's also quietly in love with Shouko, a bedridden girl who, unfortunately for him, only has eyes for Kazuki.
Life hasn't been easy for Kouyou. His adoptive parents are distant and largely indifferent to him, so when he gets picked as a Fafner pilot, they're actually relieved to see him go. He hates fighting, but after a devastating event changes everything, that gentle nature hardens into bitter resolve. He becomes determined to prove to Kazuki and Soushi that they've failed at what matters most—protecting people—and that he's the one who understands what real protection looks like.
As the third pilot selected for the Fafner program, Kouyou pilots Mark IV. Despite his reluctance for combat, he shows genuine talent in the cockpit and real potential to become an excellent pilot with time and experience.
