Ryuuma lived by a strict code of honor and justice. His core belief was simple but rigid: if someone saves your life, you owe them a debt that must be repaid, no matter what. He saw this as the foundation of what it meant to be a true swordsman. Because of this, he'd sometimes follow requests from his benefactors almost blindly, even when it conflicted with his other values. He also measured the worth of a battle not by the fame it brought, but by what he managed to protect.
As a fighter, Ryuuma had one defining quirk that caused him real trouble. He believed a sword was inseparable from the swordsman wielding it—so much so that if anyone's sheath touched his, he'd instantly interpret it as a challenge to a duel to the death and fight immediately. It was an honorable philosophy taken to an extreme, and it got him into situations he probably could've avoided.
Despite his legendary status, Ryuuma apparently didn't know who he actually was. The people he helped—those he'd saved over the years—had given him the name "The King," but he never caught on. What's ironic is that he spent time hoping to one day face this legendary "King" figure, convinced that whoever held that title possessed a true Warrior's Soul and would be a worthy opponent. He had no idea he was already that man.
Beyond his martial philosophy, Ryuuma had terrible habits with money and food, which left him broke and hungry more often than not.
In One Piece, Ryuuma appears as a revived zombie during the Thriller Bark Arc, his shadow transferred into Brook's body.
