Ru's a vampire who ended up on the run after causing serious trouble in some remote kingdom. Rather than stick around for the inevitable witch hunt, she bolted for the Forest of Death—yeah, that's the actual name—figuring nobody would think to look for her there.
Turns out she was wrong about the "nobody" part. She stumbled onto a settlement run by a guy named Hiraku Matio, who had wolf guards that were way too alert for her to slip past. Instead of making a big escape attempt, she just. stayed. She and Hiraku worked out an arrangement where she'd help the village grow using charms and alchemy in exchange for not, you know, being hunted down.
It's a pretty decent setup for a vampire trying to keep a low profile.
