Matthew was one of the applicants taking the 287th Hunter Examination.
He first appears eavesdropping on the Captain's instructions to Gon and his friends at Dolle Harbor, then follows them. When the group gets stopped in an empty alley by the Quizzing Lady and her masked associates, Matthew sees a chance to gain an advantage. The old woman poses a riddle that has to be answered in five seconds. Matthew jumps in to answer first—partly to help the group, but mostly to scout out traps for the others. After he gives his answer and gets the old lady's approval to pass, he takes what seems like the correct path. According to Kurapika, though, the route turns out to be a dead end, and Matthew is attacked by a monster. He's presumed dead.
