Millia's a Russian orphan who got picked up by an assassin syndicate as a kid. There, she learned the Six Forbidden Magics and eventually mastered the Sixth one, "Angra"—a technique that let her control her hair like a weapon, changing its length and shape on the fly. Her old colleague Zato-1 went a similar route with the Fifth Forbidden Magic, except he sacrificed his eyesight for it.
When Zato started climbing the ranks, Millia got cold feet about the whole assassination thing. She betrayed him, sealing him in some kind of dimensional pocket, and bailed on the Guild entirely. Zato's escape years later left him furious and, as it turned out, with a serious grudge against women.
Millia spent years hunting him down. She showed up at the Second Holy Order's tournament specifically to track him, but like everyone else caught up in that mess, she got played. The fighting released Justice, who got immediately destroyed by Sol Badguy before Millia could do much about it. Later, when word spread about a Gear with actual free will, another tournament popped up with a huge bounty. Millia saw her shot at Zato again. She eventually found him and seemingly ended things—except unbeknownst to her, Eddie, the parasitic creature bonded to Zato, had been slowly taking control the whole time and just took over his body.
After that, Millia settled into a quieter life. But Eddie kept showing up, so she wasn't done hunting. In XX, her story branches into three different paths, all revolving around her final confrontation with Eddie. In one, Slayer blocks her way, and while she holds her own against him, she can't beat him. He tells her something she already knows: her hair shares the same origin as Eddie. In another ending, she gets past Slayer and actually kills Eddie, finally able to rest. The third one's similar but ends on a more hopeful note—she buries Zato's body and leaves his blindfold with a lock of her hair as a memorial.
Living among normal people changed Millia. She's not the cold mercenary she used to be. She still doesn't show it much, but she feels things differently now—she can actually sympathize with people, and sometimes, when things get confusing, she just looks like a regular girl trying to figure things out.
