Alain served as sergeant of Company B in the National Guard, the unit assigned to protect Lady Oscar. He was cool with her at first—he even got along with André and helped sneak him into the troops—but things got messy once he found out Oscar's true identity. The revelation hit hard, and he turned against her leadership, refusing to take orders from a noble. The rest of the company felt the same way.
Oscar had to prove herself through combat. After she beat him in a fight and then saved one of his comrades from execution, Alain's resistance crumbled. He became deeply loyal to her from that point on, and in the manga he actually develops romantic feelings for her. But he's aware enough to recognize that her heart belongs to André, so he keeps his distance and just stays devoted from the sidelines.
