Synopsis

Rose of Versailles Marie Antoinette's mother, the Empress of Austria, arranges a political marriage between her daughter and France's crown prince, Louis XVI, hoping to strengthen ties between their nations. When Marie Antoinette arrives at Versailles, she meets Oscar François de Jarjayes, the charming captain of the Royal Guards—only to discover that Oscar is actually a woman. Oscar was raised as a boy by her noble family to preserve their military legacy, since they had no male heir. Trapped by the expectations that come with her position, Marie Antoinette finds an unexpected friend in Oscar and quickly grows close to her. But as the young, inexperienced queen begins throwing her newfound power around recklessly, Oscar finds herself torn between her duty to the crown and her growing awareness of the suffering masses. Both women are trapped by circumstances beyond their control—forced to hide who they really are and sacrifice their own happiness.
