Knox started out as a standard military surgeon, but his career took a dark turn when he was assigned to Ishval as a pathologist. There, he and other doctors were ordered to conduct experiments on Ishvalan prisoners—studying how burns and pain affected the human body. He became intimately familiar with Roy Mustang's handiwork, spending much of his time dissecting the bodies of people the Flame Alchemist had killed.
After the war ended, Knox couldn't shake what he'd done. He never went back to treating living patients, convinced he'd forfeited that right. Instead, he stuck with pathology and forensics work. The trauma followed him anyway—he dealt with PTSD for years after leaving the battlefield, plagued by flashbacks, insomnia, and nightmares about Ishval that wouldn't let up.
He's an ex-husband and father to a grown son.
