Despite her youthful appearance, Neju is actually a 2,000-year-old high priestess and spiritual leader of the planet Melmas. She's politically sharp and ruthless—assassination attempts against her have been consistently thwarted through body doubles and her formidable telepathic abilities, which allow her to control movement and dominate others through sheer mental force.
Neju first crossed paths with Seina Yamada on Jurai after his original ship, the Kamidake, took catastrophic damage in a battle with Tarant Shank. She joined Seina, Amane, Kiriko, and Ryoko aboard the Kamidake II for the trip to the G.P. Academy—a ship provided by Seto Kamiki Jurai, though the crew was strictly forbidden from using its weapons en route.
From day one on the ship, Neju barely left Seina's side, which sparked real tension among the other girls. She was even present when Fuku hatched during a pirate raid.
The secret came out when Kiriko spotted the golden necklace around Neju's neck identifying her as Melmas's high priestess. When the girls confronted her about it, she made her point by partially paralyzing them—a casual flex of her abilities. Things smoothed over quickly though, especially after Neju encouraged Fuku during another major pirate attack.
Once they reached the Academy, Seto revealed the truth: those pirate attacks had almost certainly been assassination attempts. Neju was approaching the point where she'd need to choose a successor and transition to civilian life, which normally meant five years on Melmas. Since enemies from her tenure as priestess would still be gunning for her, enrolling at the G.P. Academy as a student seemed like the safer option.
During a stopover on Earth, Neju showed up at Seina's new home using a body double to cover for her—mostly she wanted to see what his life there was actually like. While Amane, Kiriko, and Ryoko helped out at the Yamadas' new supermarket, Neju went with them. Seina and Fuku had headed to visit Tenchi and check with Washu about Fuku's origins, but they had to bail out fast when the Daluma Guild sent their "Good Luck" fleet to counter Seina's notoriously bad luck.
Like the other girls, Neju ended up betrothed to Seina through a political marriage after the Galaxy Army's rogue faction and Shank were dealt with. She witnessed Seto's ladies-in-waiting force themselves on him—they were actually Remza Union agents trying to secure an alliance with Jurai. The situation spiraled into Seina marrying the Remzans as well. By the end, Neju remained on the Kamidake II as one of Seina's eight wives and a full crew member.
