Pei Ming—officially titled General Ming Guang—is the martial god and protector deity of the north, with nine thousand temples in his honor. He's best known as "The General Who Broke His Sword," one of the Four Famous Tales, and serves as a member of the Three Tumors.
His reputation precedes him: he's a notorious womanizer across all three realms, though his tastes are surprisingly particular. He loves women regardless of whether they're gods, ghosts, or humans, but despises strong-willed types like Xuan Ji. Fans often note that his approach to romance is hard to pin down—he's genuinely tender and protective, never leading anyone on, yet he carries traditional expectations about cooking and domestic skills that feel dated even for his era. He was also perpetually embarrassed about needing rescue from the Rain Master repeatedly during their mortal days, to the point of refusing to borrow her sword.
Pride defines much of who he is. Pei Ming takes enormous arrogance in his power and success, which makes him prone to looking down on others—he once casually told Xie Lian to pry into Hua Cheng's background without thinking twice about how rude that was. He's stubborn, confident, and almost never rattled, maintaining composure even during his fight against Jun Wu. Despite this, he's fiercely protective of his allies and shielded his comrades without hesitation on Tonglu Mountain.
Away from his vanity, though, he's surprisingly relaxed and funny. He cooperates readily, even with people like Hua Cheng, and gradually warmed to Xie Lian after initially being suspicious. He was even supportive of their relationship.
What sets him apart is his honesty. Pei Ming never denies his affairs or pretends they didn't happen. He remembers his past lovers and ensures every woman he's been with lives comfortably. Hua Cheng himself confirmed Pei Ming isn't shady. This earnestness extends to how he fights—no ambushes, no sneak attacks. He refused Xuan Ji's offer to betray her nation for him on principle alone.
