Mello is L's older successor from Wammy's House, the orphanage for gifted kids that Watari runs in Winchester, England. He's best known for his fierce rivalry with Near, L's other designated successor—so fierce that when the two were supposed to work together, Mello flat-out refused, unable to accept being second to anyone.
Like L before him, Mello has a serious sweet tooth and is constantly snacking on chocolate bars. According to How to Read 13, he's got "an excellent mind," but he doesn't always use it well; his emotions tend to cloud his judgment, and his intense hatred of Near became a genuine flaw in his personality. That said, he's not a villain through and through—he genuinely cares about Matt, his partner, and the creator Tsugumi Ohba has noted that "Mello works hard for everything." Ohba also mentioned that unlike Near's name, which stands for Nate River, Mello's name doesn't really mean anything specific.
