Sukeroku was a human who lived five centuries before the story's main events. He spent most of his time around Yukiji, who he clearly admired. When Yukiji got separated from her convoy on the way to the capital, things went south fast—Sukeroku ran into Yatori, a demon who'd already wiped out the entire group. Yatori killed him and ate him on the spot.
