Mou Gou
One of Qin's great generals and the father of Mou Bu, Mou Gou came from humble beginnings in the State of Qi. He never managed to beat Zhao Renpa during his early military career—not once, from squad leader all the way up to commanding 1,000 troops. Eventually he gave up trying and relocated to Qin, where both he and his son would find much better luck.
Mou Gou was never flashy. He won fights against weaker opponents and lost against strong ones, fighting pretty much by the book without much tactical innovation. What he did have was an eye for talent. He recruited two of Qin's most famous generals—Kan Ki and Ou Sen—as his vice commanders, and they probably did a lot of the heavy lifting strategically.
His signature move was splitting his army into three equal forces and invading methodically. Rather than going for flashy victories, he'd surround a city, wear down enemy morale with sustained pressure, and wait for his opening. It worked. His grandson Mou Ten would later call him the "Famous Sieger of Cities"—the patient type who understood that sometimes battles are just a war of attrition.
Despite his reputation as a strategist, Mou Gou could handle himself in single combat. He wielded a glaive and was strong enough to actually push back Renpa in a direct fight, even if he never quite beat him.
