Rinnosuke runs Kourindou, an antique shop tucked near the Forest of Magic. He picked that spot deliberately—figured both humans and yokai would wander in—but it's basically never worked out. His shop stays dead quiet most days, interrupted only by the occasional customer he'd probably call a nuisance.
Nobody really knows what Rinnosuke is. He looks human enough, but according to various sources he's been around way longer than Reimu—long enough that his appearance hasn't changed since Marisa was a kid. He apparently remembers the previous Hakurei shrine maiden and knows the whole story behind why the shrine exists in the first place.
His real passion is the outside world. Most of his inventory comes from items that slip through the barrier—stuff from beyond Gensokyo that ends up in his hands. He's got some kind of recognition ability that lets him identify what things are called and what they're theoretically for, but the actual mechanics? That's where he hits a wall. Since he doesn't really understand modern science or how the outside world works, he tends to come up with wildly incorrect explanations for how everything functions.
