Joco's relationship with his mentor Orona started dramatically, though the exact circumstances differ depending on the source. In one account, Orona caught Joco's attention during a tense hostage situation on a snowy night—the older man's calm intervention with the armed robber somehow defused the whole thing, leaving Joco amazed.
The manga tells it differently. Joco was already traveling with his gang, Shaft, when he killed a man on Christmas—a date that held deep trauma for him, as his own parents had been murdered on the same day years before. Alone afterward and spiraling, he encountered Orona, a stranger who tried breaking through his darkness with humor and bad puns. When Joco responded by shooting, Orona simply dodged every bullet. What got to Joco wasn't the humor itself, but seeing Orona's spirit companion, Mic—a jaguar spirit riffing on Mick Jagger's name—and realizing this guy was genuinely trying to reach him.
After that, Joco trained under Orona and inherited Mic when his mentor died. He later gained a second spirit guardian, Pascal Avaf, which allowed him to form an armored oversoul called Jaguarman. His past caught up with him eventually—the man he'd killed on Christmas turned out to be the father of two people close to him, Redseb and Seyram. The guilt drove him to blind himself as penance. He became one of the Five Elemental Warriors and claimed the Spirit of Wind, standing as the strongest among them.
