Synopsis

Shamans are people who can see and communicate with ghosts, spirits, and gods—things that normal people can't perceive at all. Every five hundred years, shamans from around the world compete in the Shaman Fight, a massive tournament. Whoever wins gets the title of Shaman King and gains the power to call upon the Great Spirit and reshape the world however they want. One night, middle schooler Manta Oyamada takes a shortcut through a cemetery to get to class on time. He finds a boy sitting on a gravestone who invites him to stargaze with "them"—and Manta quickly realizes "them" means the boy and his collection of ghost friends. He bolts in panic. Later, the boy introduces himself as You Asakura, a shaman in training. You proves his worth by summoning Amidamaru, a six-hundred-year-old samurai ghost, to help fight off some thugs attacking Manta. Impressed by Manta's ability to actually see spirits, You makes him a friend and brings him into his dream: with Amidamaru's help, You's determined to become the next Shaman King.
