Hao is the main antagonist of Shaman King and arguably the series' most powerful shaman. His name means "Leaf King," and he's lived multiple lives across centuries—first as Asaha Douji during Japan's Heian era, and currently as the unexpected twin brother of protagonist Asakura Yoh. The manga side story Mappa Douji covers his early incarnations.
In his first life, Hao grew up surrounded by war and misery until he met Ohachiyo, a small demon who showed him there was good in the world too. After an accident with his first Over Soul, Ohachiyo merged with Hao permanently and cursed him with an overwhelming ability to sense Reishi—other people's spiritual pressure and emotions. As an adult, Hao became genuinely kind and peaceful, using his gifts to help others and establish the Asakura family's prosperity. He even took in the cat Matamune, calling it his only real friend.
But the gift became a curse. Hao's Reishi sensitivity grew uncontrollable, constantly bombarding him with everyone's negativity and pain. Unable to turn it off, all that darkness festered inside him until it spawned a demon in his own heart. This internal corruption eventually convinced him that the world needed a Shaman-only kingdom, and he set his sights on becoming Shaman King to make it happen.
By his current life, Hao is eerily composed and cruel—calm smiles hiding a terrifying temper. When he actually gets angry, opponents tend to end up burned away completely by his Spirit of Fire. He genuinely enjoys watching Shaman Fights, especially matches involving strong competitors and Yoh himself, and has casually mentioned he plans to eat Yoh once he's reached his full potential. Interestingly, he dislikes being called by family titles; he bristled visibly when Yoh called him "Nii-chan" and again when his nephew Hana called him "Uncle Hao," shutting both down immediately.
