Anna is an itako—a traditional Japanese medium and shaman—best known as Yoh Asakura's fiancée in Shaman King. Her specialty is channeling spirits, and unlike most shamans, she can summon them from anywhere, even heaven itself. The English anime calls her a "spirit medium."
Abandoned by her birth parents because of her abilities, Anna was taken in and raised by Kino Asakura, which means her real birth date and blood type remain unknown.
On the surface, Anna comes across as cold and pragmatic—aggressive, decisive, and shrewd. But those close to her know she genuinely cares, especially about Yoh, her first real friend. She's driven by two goals: becoming the ultimate Shaman Queen and being the perfect wife to support Yoh in his destined path as the Shaman King. That's why she pushes him so hard to train, even if it means being ruthless about it.
Her spiritual power is legitimately impressive. She managed to seal and control Hao's guardian spirits, Zenki and Kouki—no small feat. Her relationship with Hao himself is weird: she hates him and has even slapped him, yet he seemed amused rather than angry. There's speculation that Anna might be the reincarnation of Hao's mother from a thousand years ago, Asano-Ha, though it's never confirmed. Some fans think Hao might have had romantic feelings for Anna, especially since he claimed in the manga that he was serious about making her his bride.
Despite how harshly she treats Yoh, Anna clearly loves him. She's admitted it multiple times—to his friend Manta, to a Shaman Fight commissioner, and of course to Yoh himself. She fell apart when she thought he was going to die possessed by Tokagero, and when Hao supposedly stole his soul, she completely lost it. Her jealous side shows too: she beat him up over a pager she thought was from another woman, and got visibly annoyed when he asked Tamao to cook for him.
Anna attends Shinra Private Academy alongside Yoh and Manta. Her favorite singer is Ringo Awaya, a manga reference to real-life artist Shiina Ringo. Interestingly, creator Takei was born in Aomori Prefecture, and Anna is too—she's even become the mascot of the Aomori prefectural police.
