Kaoru's an older guy with short white hair, dark eyes, and the weathered look to match—complete with wrinkles and stubble. He's noticeably shorter than his grandson Wakana and tends to hunch a bit. He dresses in the same work clothes as Wakana (a samue), wears glasses, and black-laced sandals.
As a grandfather, he's genuinely caring; he raised Wakana after his parents died. What really defines him, though, is his devotion to making hina dolls. He's seriously passionate about the craft and fully supports Wakana's ambition to become a kashira-shi like him. Kaoru doesn't take a single day off lightly—he's said that missing just one day sets him back three days of practice. That's the level of commitment he brings to the art.
