A longtime friend of Bond's who turns up in "City of Wind," Sir van Allen basically saved the guy's life by helping him kick his drinking problem. He was leading an expedition when things went south—Cabrakan killed him and his whole team, mistakenly convinced they were after gold from some Incan pyramid. Not exactly the way you'd want your good deed repaid.
