Hourubou was a notorious criminal and death row inmate selected for the dangerous mission to Kotaku in search of the Elixir of Life—one of only a handful of condemned prisoners given this assignment by the shogun. Jikka Yamada Asaemon served as his assigned executioner and guardian for the expedition.
