Inspector Zeman was Detective Suk's superior and a high-ranking member of the Prague Police Department—though behind closed doors, he was a corrupt former operative of the Czechoslovakian Secret Police, connected to organized crime networks still operating after the regime's fall.
When Wolfgang Grimmer came under suspicion for murdering Reinhardt Biermann, the former director of Kinderheim 511, Zeman let him go but became convinced Grimmer knew where to find a key to a safety deposit box. Inside was an audiotape of a young Johan Liebert recorded at the orphanage—something Zeman and his colleagues were trying to sell on the black market. He arranged for two officers to pick Grimmer up in a taxi and bring him to an abandoned factory, where Zeman revealed himself and tortured the man for answers. When Grimmer refused to talk and lost consciousness from the injuries—including deep lacerations from Zeman's nails—a mysterious blonde woman showed up and shot one of Zeman's partners. She then somehow triggered Grimmer's "Magnificent Steiner" personality, driving him into a violent rage that left him beating Zeman and the other officer to death with shocking brutality.
The aftermath left Detective Suk deeply shaken. His mentor, despite being outwardly kind, turned out to be fundamentally corrupt and morally compromised. It took Suk time to process that reality.
