Enishi lost his mother as an infant and was raised entirely by his older sister, Tomoe—she was essentially both mother and sister to him. He loved her deeply, which would define much of his life.
When Tomoe got engaged to Kiyosato Akira, Enishi didn't love the idea, but he came around because Kiyosato genuinely made her happy. Kiyosato joined the Mimawarigumi hoping to become a hero and lift Tomoe's naturally serious mood, but he was killed by Hitokiri Battōsai—later known as Himura Kenshin—in the upheaval of the new era. That death sent Tomoe spiraling into a quest for revenge, and she abandoned Enishi to work with Shogunate spies. Left alone, Enishi became obsessed with bringing her back to Edo (now Tokyo) so they could be together again.
