Jealous only shows up in a flashback when Rem is explaining how to kill a Shinigami. In it, she recalls watching Jealous observe a woman in the human world—which surprises her, since Shinigami aren't supposed to care about humans. She looks over his shoulder just in time to see a man in a dark alley, convinced the woman is his ex, try to stab her to death. Jealous is apparently into her, so he uses his Death Note to kill the would-be murderer. The man wanders off and kills himself instead. But the cost is immediate: Jealous crumbles into sand and rust the moment he saves her life, since extending a human's existence violates the rules. Rem takes his Death Note and eventually gives it to Misa.
His name used to be commonly romanized as "Gelus" until Death Note: How to Read 13 clarified the official spelling as Jealous. Early English manga printings, including the first four runs of Volume 4, still referred to him by the old romanization.
Ken'ichi Matsuyama, best known for playing L in the live-action films, voices Jealous in the anime.
