Obi Hajime served as head coach of the Koudoukan, where he'd trained under Shimura Ken and earned a reputation as a sword genius around Edo. He took over leadership of the dojo while still relatively young and went on to teach both Otae and Shinpachi. His skill with a blade was apparently legendary enough that people still talked about it.
