Isane Kotetsu's partner in the co-3rd seat position, he's best known for his constant bickering with Kiyone—the two basically can't be in the same room without arguing. Despite their friction, both he and Kiyone are genuinely devoted to their captain, Jūshirō Ukitake, and look up to him considerably.
Visually distinctive, he sports braided ropes woven throughout his uniform in a style reminiscent of traditional Japanese fishermen. His personality tends toward the abrasive side, especially during arguments when he's quick to throw around insults and crude remarks.
