Tsubaki Aoi's been able to see Ayakashi her whole life—something most people can't do. Her grandfather raised her and taught her the basics of keeping them satisfied through food offerings, which basically keeps them from going feral and hunting humans. He's passed away recently, though, leaving her to manage things on her own.
Being so naturally spiritual makes Aoi stand out to the Ayakashi, and that's kind of a double-edged sword. It means they're drawn to her, but it also means she's got to stay on top of things. When these creatures get too hungry, they stop bothering with offerings and start preying on people instead. Aoi's learned how to keep that from happening—at least in theory—but losing her grandfather took away her safety net.
